- This is happening because the C64 computes the amount of free BASIC memory at
- power on. It starts at the bottom of memory and goes up until it finds ROM.
- Presumably it is writting a pattern to RAM and reading it back to see if it
- changed. A bad memory cell which cannot be changed would cause the test to
- terminate early. The 128 on power up does not compute free memory, it just
- prints 122365 bytes no matter what. If a similar test were performed on the
- 128 you should see similar results.

- The problems with 64-net and your friends disk drive would seem to indicate a
- bad CIA chip.

- You might possibly look at the MMU chip. The MMU is responsible for address
- decoding *I think* in both C64 and 128 modes. If this were to mess up it
- could explain both symptoms.
